TinyEYE: My Visit to a Fly-In Community

Speech Therapy Telepractice

The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.

~Mohandas K. Gandhi

Hi Everyone, This week, it is my privilege to visit a fly-in community and provide speech and language services. To reach this community, I stepped foot into five different airports. When I arrived, Joe picked me up at the airport and dropped me off at a cozy home where hot soup and sandwiches were waiting on the table. Then I went to the school and met the wonderful children. Working with the school team has been rewarding. After school, I went on a walk around the community. The children flocked around me – since I was a new face. One sweet girl allowed me to carry her puppy around in my coat until I was sure my toes were blue from the cold. Wearing my oversized boots, I wasn’t quite up for the game of “Tag” they kept requesting.

At one point I started to slip on some ice then a little hand pushed me forward and said, “Got your back.”  Finally, I said good-bye and a wave of hands bid me farewell. Tomorrow, this great day will start again. I cannot finish this letter without making a point. Children deserve equal access to services regardless of where they live.

Today, I felt such purpose being able to contribute my skills to this school. It is my way of serving. The children who struggle with communication challenges should also have a fair chance of growing up with the unquestionable knowledge that they too are contributors, have such a purpose, and are so capable. So – I have done assessments and gave some suggestions. The support cannot stop there. Telepractice is an incredible, cost effective tool that can help these children have regular access to services. Through on-line software, I can connect with the schools to continue to serve as a member of their team. I want to send out a big high-five to the kids in this community. I’ve “got your back”.

My gratitude to goes to the people here who were so welcoming and kind to me.  (Then go into the part about the high fives for the kids)
